Ronald Acuña Jr.'s injuries may force Braves to consider previously unthinkable decision

Okay, hear us out, because it isn't that crazy.

When Ronald Acuña Jr. came up lame on Tuesday night while running to first and was forced to leave the game early, it was an unfortunately familiar sight. Acuña Jr. has dealt with a number of injuries over the last few years. In fact, he injured the exact same hamstring earlier this season and missed a couple of weeks as a result. Unfortunately, this is becoming a trend that could end up being a real problem.

There is no denying that when Acuña Jr. is right, he is one of the absolute best players in baseball with a rare combination of speed and power in addition to having a cannon for an arm in right field. However, he has already missed a number of games this year and hasn't come close to playing a full season since his 2023 NL MVP season. Before that, you have to go back to 2019. It isn't pretty.

Unfortunately, things may be coming to a head soon. With how Acuña Jr. was playing when he was on the field this year, in combination with his injuries, the Braves' decisions as to whether or not to exercise his options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons are far less certain.

With everything that has gone on with Ronald Acuña Jr., his Braves future is even more in question

Okay, please put down your pitchforks. I assure you that very, very few people have loved Acuña Jr. as long as the author of this piece right here. The odds are good that this latest injury that Acuña Jr. is dealing with will be a non-factor going forward. Atlanta has been clear that they are going to be proactive early on when it comes to injuries and especially when it comes to handling Acuña Jr., and the early assessment of his injury was pretty positive aside from the IL stint.

However, let's put fans' feelings towards Acuña Jr. and our knowledge of what he is capable of aside for a moment. Let's say someone were to show you an unnamed player who put up video game numbers in the past, but who has played very sparingly with an extensive history of injuries over the last three years, who will be 29 on Opening Day 2027, and who is coming off a season where he posted a .793 OPS, which was buoyed by one particularly torrid stretch. Would you sign the Braves up to pay that player $17 million?

Obviously, there is more to the decision than that. The Braves have a better view of Acuña Jr.'s medicals than we ever will, and it isn't like the guy doesn't make the team a lot of money off the field from fans through other revenue streams. However, no one should just take it for granted that the Braves will keep him around for the next two seasons. With a new CBA to navigate in the very near future and some questionable production in addition to the injuries, this is a more fluid situation than many will admit.
