Do the Atlanta Braves have their very own Chandler Simpson?

There is a reason for the old adage, speed never slumps.

Chandler Simpson has been an absolute terror since he made his way to the big leagues. A left handed slap hitter, he has hit .302 with a .330 on base and a .351 slug in two seasons since being the Rays number seven ranked prospect. Whether Simpson is bunting, slapping a single the other way or stealing a bag, his 80 grade speed keeps pitchers off balance and consistently lets Tampa Bay have a runner in scoring position. He has almost as many stolen bases (90) as strikeouts (91) in 260 games played. He has only been caught a grand total of 26 times. His job is to keep pitchers off balance and uncomfortable, and business is good.

Enter Patrick Clohisy. He is the No. 16 prospect on the Atlanta Braves MLB.com top 30, and he has absolutely broke out in a big way. He played 112 games and produced a .290 average, a .372 on base and a .457 slug. MLB.com has him graded as 70 grade speed. He has been recorded at 31 feet per second. The exact same as Simpson. He truly shows he is also a terror on the bases. This year alone in those 112 games, he stole 62 bags and was only caught 15 times.

They both have insane speed. They both know how to use their speed. They both know how to get on base. They also both show incredible reads off the bat on the defensive side. They both take great routes to the ball and let the elite speed cover large amounts of ground to run down fly balls. That seems to be where the similarities seem to end.

Braves prospect Patrick Clohisy shares a lot of similarities with Chandler Simpson, but his upside may actually be higher

Both Clohisy and Simpson get on base in different ways. Simpson tends to bunt, slap hit and use soft contact just to put the ball in play. He lets his legs do the talking. He only strikes out at an incredible 7% clip, but walks even less at 2%. His on base is due to his insane ability to put the ball in play. The downside is that has cost him a lot of power. In two MLB seasons, Simpson has yet to hit a home run. He has only hit one in his professional career since being drafted in 2022. In 571 at bats this year, he only hit 19 extra base hits. He had the lowest average exit velocity in the league according to Baseball Savant.

Clohisy strikes out a lot more at 22 percent, which is still a very respectable number, but not nearly as elite as Simpson's. On the other hand, Clohisy walked five times as much at 12.4% compared to Simpson's 2%. His batting average was 12 points behind Simpson, but his on-base percentage was a loud 42 points higher. His patience at the plate allows him plenty of chances to cause havoc on the bases.

Clohisy also has a lot more pop in the bat as he hit 44 extra base hits including 10 home runs this year in almost 40 less games. He has also shown a solid ability to put up 100 MPH plus exit velocities. Not only does Clohisy put the ball in play, but he has some potential for damage as he does it. He will never be a huge home run hitter, but Clohisy has enough power to make defenses have to respect it.

Speed never slumps. Simpson has shown that for two years playing left field for the Rays. The Braves quite possibly have an open competition for left field. Does Atlanta already have their own version of Chandler Simpson, or can Patrick Clohisy be something even better?
