Ronald Acuña Jr.'s latest injury has Braves star on similar path to injury-prone Reds great

Let's hope it doesn't go this way.

It feels as if the baseball gods do not want Ronald Acuña Jr. to enjoy a healthy season. The Atlanta Braves star exited Tuesday night's game against the White Sox with hamstring tightness. This is the second time this season Acuña Jr. has been forced out of the game with left hamstring tightness, with the first occasion resulting in a stint on the injured list earlier this year.

This lower-body injury happened similarly to Ronald's first injury in Colorado this season. It came when Acuña Jr. was attempting to leg out an infield hit, and his body simply failed him. This recurring nightmare for Braves fans will cause many to spiral, and at the risk of doing so, these injuries cannot help but remind us of another talented outfielder whose career got derailed by the injury bug.

Ronald Acuña Jr's injury luck is starting to feel like former Reds great, Eric Davis' career decline

It's not fun to think this way, but when a player begins to really struggle to play over 100 games in a season, he tends to garner the injury-prone label. It's all the more deflating for a player as talented and passionate about the sport as Acuña is.

Unfortunately, this is a movie baseball fans have seen all too many times. A chat with a 1990's Reds fan will leave you hearing many of the same things Braves fans say when they describe Acuña. Back in 1990, Reds outfielder Eric Davis earned NL MVP votes for the fifth straight season and helped the Reds to a World Series title.

Sadly, in that World Series, Davis lacerated his kidney when diving for a ball, thus altering what many had thought was the prime of a potential Hall of Fame career. For Acuña Jr., it was a freak knee injury that launched this bumpy, injury-filled road.

Braves fans are obviously frustrated, but it's important to remember no one is taking this harder than Acuña himself. And before you can fire off any "time to move on from Acuña," chatter, just remember Red Sox fans felt similarly frustrated with Chris Sale's string of freak injuries.

With a player as talented as Acuña, you simply cannot give up on him. Yes, it absolutely sucks to see these injuries keep happening, but you have to remember the superstar he is when he is on the field. Hopefully, this latest hamstring scare is something that only keeps him out minimal time.

Plenty of star players have to fight through their share of injuries. Naturally, it's easy to pile on Acuña Jr. when they keep occurring, but let's just hold out hope that Acuña's injury woes will not lead down the Eric Davis road.
