The Atlanta Braves look to take the series lead in the third game of a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Max Fried takes the mound for the Braves, while the Pirates will counter with Quinn Priester.

It will be Max Fried's second start back since coming off the IL.

Pitching preview: a 22-year-old rookie takes the mound against the Braves

Quinn Preister, the third-best prospect in the Pirates system, according to MLB Pipeline, has struggled in his four starts since reaching the majors on July 17. He has allowed at least three runs in every start and has only recorded two outs in the sixth inning. In his most recent start against the Brewers, he allowed three runs in four innings, striking out three and walking three.

The 22-year-old righty throws four pitches, a fastball, a changeup, a slider, and a curve. So far, he's thrown the fastball, which has an average velocity of 93 MPH, 57% of the time. He currently holds an 8.69 ERA and a 7.24 FIP.

Priester has been hammered in his starts and has struggled to command the zone, walking 14.9% of batters.

Max Fried's 2023 on the mound has been far more successful. While the Braves' ace has spent more than 100 days on the IL this season, when he's been on the mound, he's been excellent. In six starts, he has a 1.69 ERA and 2.58 FIP. In his most recent start against the Cubs, the lefty struck out eight batters, no runs, and three base runners.

Hitter to watch

Priester has been killed by lefties this year. In 52 PAs, lefties have slashed .333/.442./.667, hitting two homers and eight doubles. Expect at least one of Albies, Olson, and/or Rosario to tee off the young rookie.

After leaving the game with an injury, fans should also look to see if Ronald Acuña Jr. is able to return, and if he can, how well he can swing the bat.
