Fans of the Atlanta Braves can have a pretty quick trigger when it comes to turning on new players and Yonny Chirinos has been no exception. After the Braves claimed Chirinos off of waivers, Yonny struggled on the mound and many were understandably concerned at the amount of playing time he was getting despite the fact that his Statcast profile looks like a recipe for disaster.
However, it appears as though that, at least for the moment, fans won't have to see Chirinos take the mound for a while. With the news that Allan Winans was going to be making the start Monday for the Braves, a roster move needed to be made and placing Chirinos on the injured list with elbow inflammation was the move made this morning.
The #Braves today recalled RHP Allan Winans to Atlanta and placed RHP Yonny Chirinos on the 15-day injured list, backdated to August 20, with right elbow inflammation.

Chirinos to the injured list, Allan Winans officially recalled
It is unclear as to whether or not Chirinos' "injury" has been the cause of his issues with the Braves, but everyone can agree that the timing seems really fortunate for the Braves. Putting Chirinos on the IL allows the team to keep him around for depth purposes (although the value of that depth is very questionable) and put Winans on the roster to make the start Monday.
Hopefully the time off gives Chirinos some time to get right, because the numbers have not been great with Atlanta. In five starts with the Braves since getting claimed off waivers, Chirinos has posted a 9.27 ERA in 22.1 innings of work. That is decidedly not great.
On the plus side, this gives Winans yet another chance to prove that he needs to hang around the big league roster for a while. Winans has posted a very nice 2.79 ERA down in Triple-A this season and both of his spot starts with the big league club went well. Assuming he can keep up the good work in the majors, it would not be surprising whatsoever if he stuck around for a while.
