The Atlanta Braves announced, after Sunday's loss to the Giants, that Allan Winans would get the start on Monday evening when the Mets come to town.
Winans was originally in the Mets organization but was picked up by the Braves in the minor-league Rule 5 draft in 2021.
He got the opportunity to start last weekend against the Mets at Citi Field and show why they were wrong to let him go. Winans completed 7 innings of work allowing no runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts.
The Braves hadn't announced a starter for Monday but once Winans didn't make his expected start at Gwinnett, it appeared they had made their decision. Fans may wonder why Michael Soroka wasn't selected to start and that's mainly because he pitched on Saturday for the Stripers.
They may also feel more confident in Winans' ability to do well against New York. It will be tough as facing the same team twice can sometimes go the wrong way for the pitcher. However, Winans shows a lot of confidence in his ability to pitch so he will definitely give his best effort.
The Mets have been awful this season and find themselves just one game from being in last place in the NL East. They are 23 games behind the first-place Braves and makes it easy for Atlanta to just brush off this series.
Lucky for fans, the Braves don't play that way and will continue to play New York as if we were fighting for the top spot in the division. Winans isn't a flamethrower but he showed a great pitch mix and ability to locate his pitches.
He will certainly bring his A-game and look to show the Mets once again why it was a mistake to let him go. They seem to make a lot of mistakes that come back to bite them.
Fortunately, their mistake has the chance to become a major win for the Atlanta Braves.
