Atlanta continued to receive great starting pitching as Reynaldo Lopez looked really good against the Cubs on Monday night. However, he exited the game after five innings due to tightness in his back.
Lopez is not expected to miss his next start and the Braves removed him to exercise caution. That is great news because Atlanta was already nervous about potentially losing Austin Riley to an oblique injury but things look promising on that end as well.
The bullpen stepped up and kept the Cubs off the board and a clutch double from Zack Short started the scoring for Atlanta. He then scored the second run thanks to a single from Ronald Acuna Jr. Short even made a nice defensive play at third in the absence of Austin Riley. Those two runs were ultimately enough as Atlanta beat Chicago 2-0.
Atlanta will try for the series win tonight as they send another one of their best starters to the mound against the Cubbies. Let's check out the starting lineups and pitchers for tonight's game.
Probable starting pitchers for Braves vs. Cubs
Jameson Taillon (3-0, 1.13 ERA) is in his second season with the Cubs and he's off to a nice start. Through 24 innings (four starts) his era sits just above one and has five walks and 16 strikeouts. His most recent start came against the Brewers and he pitched six scoreless innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Chris Sale (5-1, 2.95 ERA) makes his eighth start of 2024 and he has been an incredible pick-up for the Braves. He has returned to form and racked up 10 strikeouts in his last start against the Red Sox. Sale has eight walks and 52 strikeouts so far and is pitching on the anniversary of his career-best 17-strike-out performance when he was with Boston.
