Because of the New Nike template, it was already known that the Braves home and away jerseys would look slightly different. As it turns out, it's not the only change the team would be making.
As pitchers and catchers reported, however, players broke out a tweaked navy Atlanta Braves jersey that signals a change in their away alternate.
Let's take a look at the difference.
The new 2024 Atlanta Braves navy alternate jersey
There's really only one minor change, but it's a very noticeable change.
From 2008 until 2018, the Braves' navy away alternate jersey was all navy, except for the white outline for the script and the numbers, as well as the white lettering for last names.
In 2019, the Braves introduced an update to the navy uniform, making the script red instead of navy, and adding silver piping to the placket and the sleeves. This is what the team has worn up until last season.
For the 2024 season, it looks like the Braves have gone back to the drawing board, and by drawing board, I mean that they went into photoshop and changed the piping color to red and called it a day.
Wait, aren't these just Spring Training jerseys?
It'd be understandable if you thought these were just Spring Training jerseys. After all, the Braves wore a jersey very similar to the 2008-2018 navy version with the Braves script on the front of the jersey for Spring Training as recently as last year.
However, it appears that Nike/MLB is now counting Spring Training jerseys as one of the 4+1 (4 "regular jerseys + 1 City Connect) teams are allowed to have. Last month, Paul Lukas of Uni-Watch revealed that the St. Louis Cardinals were dropping their red Spring Training jerseys even though the team never wore the red jerseys during the season.
As Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net noted in his tweet, Spring Training jerseys are no longer a thing except for the Yankees and Tigers.
In addition to the home and away jerseys and the navy jersey, the Braves have the red Friday jersey, which means the team is at the cap for four jerseys, in addition to their City Connect.
But wait, that's not all...
In addition to revealing a new jersey, the Braves also displayed a change in their pants.
Since the Boston Braves existed, the Braves have had pant piping on the belt loops.
Unfortunately, in the name of streamlining, Nike has decided to eliminate a very unique part of the team's uniforms, stripping the pants of the belt loop piping. This was confirmed by Uni-Watch.
Maybe I was wrong, maybe we should blame Nike for all the changes.
