The 2025 Atlanta Braves season has been disastrous, to say the least. From being projected to be one of the best teams in baseball to suddenly having a churn of players quickly forgotten, this season has been one to try and erase from our collective memory.
However, Cal Quantrill, who started for the Braves on Saturday after being claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins, made it a little harder to forget the 2025 Braves, as he somehow made double-history by taking the field.
When Cal Quantrill gets the start tonight, he will be the 17th different pitcher to start a game for the Braves this season. That’s the most starting pitchers used in a single season in franchise history. 1911, 1936, 1945, 2016 and 2023 all had 16.

Cal Quantrill makes history for the Braves
Simply by starting a game, Quantrill put himself in the Braves record books. Braves fans are no doubt aware that the club has used a myriad of starting pitchers, but they most likely weren't aware of just how many pitchers they had used.
Prior to this season, the most starters a Braves team had used in a single season was 16, which had been done five times and as recently as 2023. By August 9 of this year, with nearly two months to play, the Braves had already tied this mark after Hurston Waldrep made his first true start of the season.
With Quantrill's start officially in the books, the Braves now have a new dubious record for most starting pitchers used in a single season, which we hope won't be broken any time soon.
However, Quantrill himself wasn't done setting Braves history. Although he is the son of former major leaguer Paul Qunatrill, who played 14 years in the bigs, his and his father's last name begins with a fairly rare letter.
In MLB history, there have only been 55 players with a last name beginning in Q to even play in the major leagues. While the Boston Braves had four players whose last names began with Q and the Milwaukee Braves had one player, the Braves had never rostered a Q surname until Quantrill pitched on Saturday.
While the start itself wasn't pretty and cut short due to cramps, Quantrill's name will live in the Braves record books forever in at least two ways.
