Benches-clearing altercations are a rare occurrence in Major League Baseball, and for the Atlanta Braves, they have been even less common. However, late Tuesday night, a former Brave found himself at the center of a heated incident at Angel Stadium.
Jorge Soler and Reynaldo López were both ejected during a benches-clearing incident in the bottom of the fifth inning after Soler charged the mound in response to a 97 mph fastball that rode high and inside.
Nothing earlier in the game suggested tensions were close to boiling over. However, Soler took López deep in the first inning — continuing his strong track record against the Braves right-hander — and was then hit by a 96 mph fastball in his next at-bat that appeared to get away from López.
The fastball that ultimately sparked the altercation appeared to be a wayward pitch. After Nolan Schanuel advanced to second on the misfire from López, Soler stared down the Braves starter, and the two briefly exchanged words. The confrontation quickly escalated, as Soler took several steps toward the mound. Within moments, López and Soler were trading punches, prompting both benches to clear as teammates rushed in to separate them.

Jorge Soler and Reynaldo Lopez exchange punches as fireworks erupt in Braves and Angels matchup
The wave of Braves and Angels players rushing in to separate López and Soler was, somewhat surprisingly, led by Atlanta manager Walt Weiss. Upon further review, it appears Weiss was the one who brought Soler to the ground in an effort to prevent the situation from escalating further. Known for his intensity in the weight room, Weiss showed that same edge in the heat of the moment.
After Soler and López were separated, Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies was seen with his arm around his former teammate, attempting to help de-escalate the situation. Emotions were clearly running high in Anaheim, but order soon began to be restored as tensions gradually eased. Time will tell whether or not Major League Baseball seeks further discipline for either Soler or Lopez.
While tempers briefly flared, the situation ultimately remained contained, with cooler heads prevailing before it could escalate further. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the intensity and competitiveness that define Major League Baseball, even on nights that begin without incident. In the end, what stood out just as much as the confrontation itself was the effort from players and staff on both sides to restore order and keep the focus on the game.
But we'll be waiting for those postgame comments, and all eyes will be on the series finale tomorrow afternoon.
