Eight year veteran pitcher A.J. Minter will be wearing a non-Atlanta Braves jersey at the big league level for the first time in 2025. Earlier this month, Minter signed a two-year $22 million deal with the rival Mets and broke the hearts of Braves fans everywhere.
The deal has an opt-out after 2025, so Minter could rebuild his value next season then cash in ahead of the 2026 season. That scenario can play out if Minter can show the hip injury that sidelined him last season won't be a lingering concern. The former night shift member will look to accomplish just that wearing Mets colors in 2025.
Saturday afternoon, Minter spoke about what it will be like to pitch in Atlanta for the first time as a member of the opposition and uhh...his comments definitely got Braves' fans attention.
Former Brave says he's ready for the challenge to pitch against Atlanta
Minter was a late-inning weapon for the Braves ever since his debut in 2017. His career was a bit of a rollercoaster at first, but over the last few years Minter established himself as one of the best late-inning lefties in baseball. His career 3.28 ERA and 2.89 FIP should provide a big boost to the Mets bullpen so long as Minter is fully recovered from the hip injury.
When Minter was asked what the emotions would be like when he steps back onto the field at Truist Park he gave a heartfelt answer. "Atlanta holds a close place in my heart, I'll do anything for them." Minter said.
He then followed by proclaiming he is ready for the challenge of facing the Braves talented lineup. "At the same time, I'm here to beat them." Minter said to New York reporters. It certainly will be an epic battle once Minter toes the slab against the Braves powerful lineup.
As we know the Braves have long feasted on left-handed pitching, and when healthy Minter is one of the premier left-handed relievers in the game. Get your popcorn ready because the battles between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets will be must-see TV in 2025.
