Unlike most years, the Atlanta Braves find themselves picking in the top-10 in the 2026 MLB Draft and that increased the stakes. While the Braves' farm system is on the rise, they haven't had the chance to add this much talent to their prospect ranks in a long time, and they do not want to waste it. Thankfully, after lots of speculation as to who Atlanta would pick, the Braves selected Virginia OF AJ Gracia.

Gracia is the 14th-ranked 2026 draft prospect according to Baseball America and 19th-ranked one according to MLB Pipeline. According to the current scouting reports, Gracia is a very solid all-around hitter with a solid approach and the ability to hit for power. His future defensive home is probably in left field, but there is a chance for better than that and he is surprisingly projectable for a college bat. In 56 games for Virginia in 2026, Gracia slashed .354/.489/.632 with 14 homers.

Fans have been clamoring for the Braves to be more aggressive in their pursuit of offensive talent for years. After taking Tate Southisene in the first round last year, Atlanta opted to turn to the college ranks for a player that is a bit closer to the majors this time. Of note, it feels very likely that Gracia will not require full slot value to sign, so the Braves may have a bit of extra money to play with in this year’s draft after picking him.

While he was ranked in the teens by most publications, Gracia is by no means a perfect pick. He doesn’t have much of an arm for an outfielder, although he generally takes good routes to the ball. There are also some whispers that his medical showed concerns with his shoulder, although that matters less with bats than pitchers and there are differing opinions as to how serious those concerns are long-term.
