For the third consecutive day, the Atlanta Braves have made a roster move. On Wednesday afternoon, the club reinstated outfielder Eli White from the seven-day concussion injured list. To clear a spot on the roster, Atlanta designated fellow outfielder José Azócar for assignment.

The outfield shuffle was largely expected, as it was always anticipated that White’s stint on the injured list would be brief. Still, Azócar’s solid play during White’s absence created at least a small possibility that the club could find a way to keep him on the roster. Instead, it appears Alex Anthopoulos will once again leave it up to the waiver wire, as Azócar was squeezed off Atlanta’s roster yet again.

Braves reactivate Eli White from injured list, Designate José Azócar for assignment

In just nine games with Atlanta in 2026, Azócar posted an impressive .333/.375/.467 slash line while producing 0.3 bWAR. That strong showing is part of the reason why manager Walt Weiss reportedly doubts Azócar will clear waivers this time around.

However, choosing Azócar over White was never a realistic possibility, especially considering White’s elite speed and his occasional power potential. In 26 games this season, White has posted a .648 OPS while also providing solid defense in the outfield, highlighted by the incredible catch he made against the Dodgers that ultimately sent him to the injured list.

Now that Ronald Acuña Jr. has returned, the Braves’ outfield alignment against right-handed pitching appears firmly set. Eli White should still continue to see opportunities against left-handed pitching, likely rotating in for Mike Yastrzemski when favorable matchups arise.

While it’s unfortunate to see Azócar lose his roster spot after such a productive stint, the move ultimately reflects the improving health and depth of the Braves’ outfield. With Acuña Jr. back in the lineup and White returning from the injured list, Atlanta's outfield once again has the defensive versatility and speed it values on the bench. Now, the Braves will wait to see whether Azócar can sneak through waivers or if another club gives the 30-year-old outfielder a new opportunity.
