Braves just promoted top pitching prospect from 2025 draft for second time in 5 days

Augusta didn't get to enjoy this prospect for very long.

How dominant do you have to be to get a promotion to high-A after just one start? Apparently, as dominant as Atlanta Braves' No. 6 prospect Briggs McKenzie was on Friday night. The 2025 fourth-round pick was stellar in his Low-A debut with Augusta, as he twirled five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.

McKenzie was promoted to Augusta less than a week ago after a few starts with the Rookie-level Florida Complex League Braves. His lone start with Augusta featured a ton of strikes and whiffs on his fastball, curveball, and changeup. McKenzie was so dominant that Braves brass didn't want to waste any time; the club announced he was promoted to High-A Rome after just one start.

This rapid ascent is very reminiscent of Spencer Strider zooming through the farm system in 2021. Of course, McKenzie is a prep arm, whereas Strider had pitched two seasons at Clemson, so we shouldn't expect a fast track to Atlanta for the 19-year-old left-hander. McKenzie has a long way to go, but early signs point to the Braves having quite the pitching prospect on their hands.

It appears Braves' prospect Briggs McKenzie could be on the Spencer Strider promotion plan

As a reminder, Strider made it all the way to the majors from low-A Augusta during the 2021 season. During that season, Strider made just four starts with Augusta before his promotion to Rome. With Rome, Strider continued to pile up the strikeouts and made just three starts before he was promoted to Double-A Mississippi. Strider spent the bulk of his 2021 season with Mississippi, and if McKenzie dominates hitters in the same fashion, this very well could be the plan for him as well.

Although McKenzie was a fourth-round pick, he was given a signing bonus of $3 million (roughly first-round pick money) to forgo his LSU commitment. It seems he is proving the Braves right in their assessment thus far. The Braves organization is known for being aggressive in its promotions. While McKenzie isn't physically mature enough yet to make it all the way to Atlanta, he will certainly move up through the system so long as he continues to produce.

Part of the young lefties' maturation will be holding his velocity deeper in his starts, something that was a question mark coming out of the draft. Regardless, we have learned McKenzie's renowned curveball is an absolute weapon, and the changeup is a lot better than originally advertised.

The Braves' farm system has enjoyed a plethora of breakout campaigns, and it looks like McKenzie could be the latest name to join this group. The next step will be monitoring McKenzie's next few starts with High-A Rome; if they are anything like his Low-A debut, McKenzie may not be pitching for Rome very long.
