The Atlanta Braves have some extremely talented prospects in their minor league system. Fans have benefitted from seeing some of that talent already in 2026. JR RItchie being the most recent to show just how valuable he is.
Ritchie grabbed everyone's attention with an incredibly well-pitched game for his big league debut. However, there is much more talent stashed in the minors. John Gil is another name Braves fans need to keep a close eye on.
Gil showed a lot of promise this spring, with a surprising amount of pop in his bat given his pre-existing scouting report. In fact, Gil has played himself into having a real chance at making the Braves' roster in the future. He's a talented shortstop with good range, but he could easily slide to second base if the team needed him to.
Braves prospect John Gil is playing out of his mind right now in the minors
Gil has continued to play very well this year for Atlanta's High-A affiliate, the Rome Emperors. Over 17 games played this season, he has a .273/.359/.455 slash line with 18 hits. This includes three doubles, three homers, 13 RBI, 10 BB, 16 K, 30 total bases, and an .814 OPS.
Gil's on an absolute tear over the last four games with Rome. Gil is 10-for-19 with three doubles, one homer, and three RBI. There's very little likelihood fans would see him play in the big leagues this season. He is only 19 years old and needs some time in the higher minor league levels before he's remotely ready for that.
However, he could make things interesting for next season if Gil continues to play at the pace he is right now. There's hope he's going to hit for more power, and we saw flashes of that in spring training.
Gil's speed is another great tool that he has going for him, and it could give Atlanta a great base-stealing option in the future. Gil has stolen 12 bases already in 2026, so the speed is already playing in games early on. That's something that could really help improve his chances of making the Braves' roster in the next couple of years, assuming he can continue to hit.
