The Atlanta Braves have a decidedly mixed track record recently in international free agency. Unless something radical changes, Ambioris Tavarez and Diego Benitez, both high bonus-figure signings for the Braves, are busts, and Jose Perdomo can't seem to stay healthy at all. However, Atlanta also added Luis Guanipa, who seems to have figured something out this year, and Diego Tornes, who has the makings of a stud among others. However, we may be reaching Kevin Maitan-levels of hype with shortstop Alfredo Sena.

While it can't be official until January 15, Sena is pretty much a lock to sign with the Braves for a staggering $5.8 million bonus. Given that that represents the vast majority of Atlanta's total international bonus pool, the Braves really need Sena to be a special kind of player.

As it turns out, that might be exactly what Sena ends up being, and fans need to start learning his name.

Braves have a chance to reverse their international free agency fortunes with impending Alfredo Sena signing

On paper, Sena has the makings of a generational prospect. Sena is a switch-hitting shortstop that, according to available information, which can be sketchy with kids this young, should hit for both average and power, has real speed, and has gotten widespread praise for his defense. With Sena's current build, he probably can't gain too much more weight/muscle without slowing down and potentially needing to move to third, but he may not need to add anything other than experience to reach his lofty potential.

It is no wonder that Sena is considered the top international free agent in the 2027 class, as well as why it is costing the Braves as much as it is to sign him. If you want the best players, you have to pay up to get them, and Atlanta certainly seems on course to do just that.

However, it is very important to remember that, as talented and exciting as Sena is, he is still a teenager and is anything but a sure thing to become a star. Baseball is hard, and so much can happen between now and when Sena (hopefully) makes it to the majors. Remember, it wasn't that long ago that Perdomo had the look of a special talent as well, and now he can't even stay on the field long enough to figure out what he can be at this point. Some caution is required with Sena, but that doesn't mean he isn't fun to dream about.
