Power rankings consistently manage to unsettle at least one fan base with each update. In Major League Baseball’s most recent installment, the Atlanta Braves appear to be among the teams feeling particularly disrespected.
Despite approaching May with the best record, and the second-best run differential in the sport, the Atlanta Braves still slipped one spot in the latest MLB power rankings. Atlanta was overtaken by the New York Yankees, pushing the Braves down to third in what many would consider a somewhat debatable ordering.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (19–9) continue to hold the top spot in the rankings, despite going 5–5 over their last 10 games and splitting a series with the Colorado Rockies. The surging New York Yankees (18–10) follow closely behind in second place.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves (20–9), who remain the only team in Major League Baseball yet to lose a series this season, sit just behind them at No. 3 despite racing out to this record without some of their notable arms in the rotation. The placement has drawn criticism from fans, many of whom have questioned the logic behind the latest iteration of the power rankings.

Braves listed at No. 3 in latest power rankings, fans rightfully voicing their frustration
When MLB released its latest power rankings on social media, Braves fans were quick to voice their frustration over what they viewed as a questionable placement. The response was swift, with some labeling the rankings “laughable,” while others accused MLB of showing preferential treatment toward the large market New York and L.A. teams.
At the end of the day, a power rankings list in late April is not something to overanalyze. However, it does underscore just how highly the Dodgers and Yankees are regarded league-wide. Both Los Angeles and New York unquestionably boast elite rosters, but Atlanta’s performance on the field has made a strong case that the Braves belong firmly in the same tier of contention as those two perennial powerhouses.
Fortunately for baseball fans, the Braves and Dodgers will have an opportunity to face off during the second weekend of May in a three-game series that could serve as a true measuring-stick matchup for Atlanta. As the early-season narrative continues to take shape, matchups like this offer more than just another series in the standings—they provide a clearer picture of where elite teams truly stand.
For Atlanta, the upcoming showdown with Los Angeles presents a chance to validate its hot start against the back-to-back reigning World Series champions. Regardless of where the power rankings place them, the Braves will have an opportunity to let their play on the field do the talking.
