By all accounts, the 2025 season is one of the absolute worst that Atlanta Braves fans have seen in modern memory. It rivals the brutality that was the rebuilding years around a decade ago and there are honestly few seasons that living Braves fans can point to that could be considered worse. As to where exactly this season ranks in pure ineptitude since the team came to Atlanta, that requires a bit more digging.
Here is what we know, the Braves, as of August 6, currently have a 47-65 record which amounts to a .420 winning percentage. If that holds, it would be the worst Braves winning percentage since 2015 and they are currently on pace for a 68-94 record. That wouldn't be the worst record that a Braves team has posted since the team moved to Atlanta in 1966, but it is close and they could end up holding up the "crown" when the dust settles.
Here is a look at where the 2025 season ranks in terms of terrible-ness in Atlanta Braves history.
Looking at the worst seasons the Braves have posted since 1966 helps give us an understanding as to how this Braves squad ranks in modern history. Yes, there are a lot more terrible teams you can include if you go way with the 1935 Boston Braves and their brutal 38-115 being one of the gold standards for awfulness, but it was a different time back then and not overly relatable to the modern game of baseball.
Here are the worst Braves seasons since 1966 that we can find that have lower winning percentages than the Atlanta has right now.
Season | Record | Winning Percentage |
|---|---|---|
1988 | 54-106 | .338 |
1977 | 61-101 | .377 |
1989 | 63-97 | .394 |
1990 | 65-97 | .401 |
1985 | 66-96 | .407 |
1979 | 66-94 | .413 |
2015 | 67-95 | .414 |
1975 | 67-94 | .416 |
Of note, there is a little weirdness with the records as we aren't looking at full 162 game seasons in some cases here. However, between raw wins and losses along with winning percentages, we can get a pretty good sense that these seasons are the ones to "beat".
The late 1980's and 1990 Braves were famously terrible and a part of the "worst to first" mythology after the Braves got to the World Series in 1991. Same goes for the mid to late 1970's Braves teams that wasted Dale Murphy's prime and perhaps cost him induction into Cooperstown.
The easiest parallel we can draw, at least in terms of how bad they are, is with the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Atlanta's current pace would put them square between the records of those rebuilding Braves teams which...is not what you want to see from a team that fully expected to compete for a playoff spot this season. However, another lengthy losing streak could put moving "up" the rankings in a hurry.
In short, things could be worse, Braves fans, and at least Atlanta is a favorite for the #1 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft which could bring in a welcome infusion of talent. However, there is still a chance that this season could be the worst since the team came to Atlanta if a few more things don't go the Braves' way.
