For all of the things that have gone the Atlanta Braves' way in 2026 so far, and there are a lot of them, few could be considered as surprising as how good Mauricio Dubon has been. Coming into this season, Dubon was seen as a talented utility infielder when the Braves traded for him, but one whose bat wasn't exactly going to scare anyone. Before 2026, Dubon had not posted a season wRC+ higher than 99, and that was back in 2020.
The story with Dubon was very different this season until recently. Through Dubon's first 22 games with the Braves, he slashed .313/.360/.475 and drove in 14 runs while providing excellent defense pretty much wherever Atlanta put him. It is fair to say that the Braves would not have done nearly as well during that stretch without Dubon going wild as he did.
However, things have been very different over the last two weeks. Not only has Dubon been slumping pretty badly, but his return to earth could not have come at a worse time.
The Braves need Mauricio Dubon to figure things out at the plate again in the wake of their unique injury situation
Given that Ha-Seong Kim will be returning from his rehab assignment soon, it wouldn't matter under most circumstances if his replacement was struggling to hit. However, Dubon's .175/.267/.300 line over his last 11 games could pose problems that go beyond production at shortstop.
Not only is Michael Harris II currently nursing a quad injury that has kept him out of the field, but now Ronald Acuña Jr. is on the injured list with a hamstring strain as well. Even if Kim came back immediately, the Braves would have to deploy Dubon in the outfield if they want to put together a lineup with any semblance of depth and balance. They just don't have another realistic option available.
Of course, having Dubon playing the outfield is only really good if he is actually hitting, and he just isn't right now. The odds were never good that he would be able to keep up the torrid pace he was on, but it is also unlikely he will remain THIS bad the rest of the way.
At least, the Braves better hope that last part is true. If Dubon continues to struggle as he has been, it won't take long for calls to start coming thick and fast for Acuña Jr. and Harris to take their posts again as soon as is humanly possible and to send Dubon to the bench.
