This Ozzie Albies red flag should have the Braves worried, but there is real hope

Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies has been a staple in the lineup for a while now. Albies always seems to be having an incredible time on the field and is often seen teasing his teammates. It's hard to envision the team without him at second base. He's a great clubhouse leader and can be a tone setter when he's healthy and at his best. The problem over the last two years has been his health. Luckily, he's remained healthy this season and is an offensive force.

Albies has been great at the plate so far, with a .322/.374/.541 slash line. This includes eight doubles, eight home runs, 23 RBI, a 153 wRC+, and .322 BABIP. That's super encouraging to see from Atlanta's second baseman. He struggled over the last couple of years, but seems to be firing on all cylinders. He does need to work on walking a bit more often, but his strikeout rate is incredible. Albies is also squaring up the ball a lot more often. That will make all the difference in the world.

Unfortunately, his high batting average on balls in play (BABIP) indicates he is getting a bit lucky. That should be expected from Albies, as we know he is a good "bad ball" hitter. That's not encouraging, because if the luck wears off, he could be back to being a black hole in the lineup. That said, it isn't like we haven't see this sort of profile work before and with a player that is probably headed to Cooperstown eventually.

Ozzie Albies' profile screams that regression is coming, but it also looks a lot like how Jose Altuve found success

If you look at Albies' profile right now, it looks a lot like prime and healthy Jose Altuve. If you go back to 2024, Altuve's bat speed, hard hit rate, chase rate, walk rate, and average exit velocity were very close to what Albies has done so far this season. That's incredibly promising and exactly what the Braves need out of him to be competitive. Albies bat can be a difference maker when he's healthy. If his profile being atypical is the one thing to be concerned about, the Braves are in a good place.

Albies looks poised to have a great season with the Braves. This is good, considering that there were rumblings this past offseason that Atlanta may move on from their second baseman. But his contract is too affordable, and there aren't many better options available out there.

Albies is also doing his best to make a case for Atlanta to keep him around for at least one more year. He has a $7 million club option remaining for 2027 before he reaches free agency. If he continues putting up the numbers he is this year, there's no way the Braves move on from him.
