Over the years, it's often been the case that the Atlanta Braves go as Ronald Acuña Jr. goes. Atlanta's leadoff man is often the straw that stirs the drink, but 2026 has not been very kind to the former NL MVP. Acuña's 105 wRC+ for the season would be a career low for a single season, and in August the struggles have intensified.

In 20 games this month, Acuña Jr. has an abysmal 4.7 BB%, 27.9 K%, and 77 wRC+. It's no surprise the Braves have struggled so much over the last couple of weeks. Atlanta's offense has squared off against some good pitching recently, but having your stars raise their level of play is the antidote to this problem. Unfortunately, for Ronald Acuña Jr., his struggles stem from a familiar flaw in his game.

Ronald Acuña Jr. struggles against four-seam fastballs has popped back up at the worst time

The abnormally high K rate in August is one thing, but it's been a season-long struggle against the four-seam fastball that has plagued the Braves' star outfielder. Last season, Acuña Jr. was impressive against four-seamers, producing a .426 xwOBA, .627 xSLG, and positive 16 run value. However, this season those numbers have dipped to .292 xwOBA, .323 xSLG, and -8 run value against four-seamers.

It's been a common theme in Acuña's "down" seasons, but the struggles against four-seam fastballs is often the culprit for Acuña Jr.. When Acuña had a tough start to the 2024 season, it was his -3 run value against four-seamers that told the tale of his season. Conversely, during his 2023 MVP season, Acuña Jr. produced a positive 15 run value against four-seam fastballs.

This up-and-down performance really sums up how Acuña Jr.'s inconsistencies this year have taken a toll on Atlanta's offensive performance. The month of August has put those struggles on full display, and if the Braves want to turn things around, it begins with their leadoff man. Hopefully, Acuña Jr. can find his 2023 and 2025 form against four-seam fastballs, as this subtle improvement could be the key to unlocking the entire Braves offense.
