We have finally reached the point in the offseason where rumors are swirling and free agent signings are going down. Of course, Alex Anthopoulos runs a tight-lipped operation for the Atlanta Braves, so actual sourced rumors are scarce around this organization. However, thanks to a recent report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, we can start to piece together how the Braves might navigate this offseason.
According to Rosenthal, the Braves are placing a high value on their PPI pick (26th overall in next year's draft). In Rosenthal's latest article, he details the Braves' interest in Edwin Diaz, but explains how their desire to keep the PPI pick may prevent them from aggressively pursuing free agents with a qualifying offer attached. Unfortunately for Braves fans, that means rumored free agents like Ranger Suarez or any of the other QO guys could be off the table.

Braves valuing their PPI pick could keep them out of Ranger Suarez sweepstakes
The former Phillies starter is high on the wishlist for many Braves fans clamoring for a rotation upgrade. However, as more and more reports arise it seems Atlanta would really have to love the contract to part ways with their PPI pick. With each free agent starter accompanied with a QO, the Braves' competition don't face the same penalties in forfeiting as high a draft pick (though some of them could lose multiple picks which might be worse). That is why signing Suarez, Michael King, or any other player with a QO is an uphill battle.
Rosenthal did point out that Atlanta's value on the PPI pick does not entirely remove them from this pocket of free agents. In fact, Rosenthal said if the Braves were to sign one of these QO free agents, a starting pitcher would likely be the player they veiw is worth parting with the PPI pick for. It remains to be seen if these free agents will stay within the price range Anthopoulos feels comfortable.
The Braves drafted Hurston Waldrep and top prospect Cam Caminiti in the mid 20s, so it is no surprise how much they covet their PPI pick. Atlanta's roster needs remain the same, but it is beginning to feel like the trade market may end up being the path forward for a splash move. Now that Atlanta knows exactly where they will be drafting in 2026, perhaps the offseason can begin to kick into a second gear.
