On this day, February 24, in 2017, the Atlanta Braves made one of the most intriguing signings of that baseball offseason, as the club signed a former Georgia football standout, Sanders Commings, to a minor league deal.
This day in Braves history: Atlanta signs Sanders Commings to minor league deal
At Georgia from 2009-12, as well as in the NFL for a few seasons shortly after, Commings was signed to a minor league deal on February 24, 2017. Commings was no stranger to baseball as well, as he was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 37th round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Westlake High School in Augusta, GA prior to opting-to play football collegiately at Georgia.
When it comes to on-field action aside from Spring Training, Commings would not see time until the month of June, where he would be assigned to the Danville Braves on June 21, 2017. Danville at the time was a Rookie-Level affiliate of the Braves, playing in the Appalachian League.
Sanders' stay in the organization would go on to be short however, as the former Georgia standout would appear in only six games with the Danville Braves prior to being released by Atlanta on July 3, 2017.
Across those six games, Commings would slash a combined .154/.267/.231, going 2-for-13 at the plate during that span. Commings would also have one double and RBI across those six games, while also composing a 9:1 K:BB ratio offensively.
Defensively, Commings saw time in both center and left field where he held a perfect 1.000% fielding percentage with no errors committed.
As mentioned previously, Commings would be released by the Atlanta Braves back on July 3, 2017, bringing an end to his time with the organization. Commings has also not played baseball at the professional level since.
