Preview: Charlie Morton looks to get Braves off to strong start against Dodgers
By Eric Cole
Coming off back to back series wins over the Rangers and Mariners, the Atlanta Braves are set to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers for a three game set at home that will determine early season supremacy in the National League.
For the first game, the Braves will be sending Charlie Morton to the mound. Charlie has not only gotten an extra day of rest in-between starts for this one, but he is also coming off arguably his best start of the season where he struck out 10 batters against the Rangers. The Dodgers are still the Dodgers, so it won't be easy...but the Braves seem to be in a good position with a well-rested Morton on the mound.
Braves vs. Dodgers Pitching Matchup
We already covered Charlie above a bit, but it is worth mentioning that he is putting up a really nice season for the Braves so far as he has posted a 2.85 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 47.1 innings of work. Charlie has also gone at least six innings in five of his last six starts this year. Several Dodgers players have some real experience against Morton and unfortunately, both Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts have had success against him (especially Freddie).
Opposing Morton will be Gavin Stone who is making just his second major league start for the Dodgers. Stone has really impressed in the minor leagues to be sure, but his first big league start against the Phillies was decidedly less impressive as he gave up four runs in four innings of work. Obviously the Braves don't have any experience against him, so it will be interesting to see how good their swings are against him especially early on.
