The Atlanta Braves will look to right the ship as they lost their opening game against the Marlins on Friday night by a 9-6 final.
The offense put runs on early to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and eventually took a 6-4 lead. However, the Marlins came back thanks to an unfortunate performance from the bullpen and that's all she wrote.
Atlanta will hope for much better results on Saturday in Miami. The team hadn't announced a starter until after Friday's game. It is expected that Jared Shuster will get the start for the Braves as they continue to rotate arms to cover that fifth rotation spot.
Shuster hasn't had the best luck in the Majors this season whatsoever. His ERA is 5.26 through 49.2 innings pitched at the big league level in 2023. His most recent start for the Braves took place back on August 27th in San Francisco.
He was able to complete 4.2 innings in that start allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. It wasn't his best and was par for how most of his season has gone. He would be sent back down to Triple-A Gwinnett after this start.
The young Atlanta lefty has spent most of his season with the Stripers and has a 5.09 ERA through 76 innings. He started most recently for the Stripers on Sept. 9 and was able to complete 6 innings. It was a decent start as he allowed just 1 run on 3 hits.
However, the one thing that continues to stand out about Shuster is that he walks a lot of batters. Jared walked 5 batters in those 6 innings but did strike out 7 during the outing as well. Technically, it was a quality start but those walks have got to come down if he's going to make the next step to being effective at the MLB level.
Shuster will hopefully be able to eat some innings for Atlanta so they can try and give the bullpen a little bit of rest. First pitch from Miami is at 4:10 PM EST.
