Welcome to House That Hank Built’s latest series: Guessing random Atlanta Braves players from the past! Take the opportunity to participate in our daily guessing game every morning at 3:00 pm EST. We will give you five hints at a random player who donned an Atlanta Braves jersey and see if you can guess from there! Have fun and no cheating! Here we go! 

Hint #1 (Career Length): This player spent a total of 15 seasons in the MLB. During this time, he made appearances for the following teams: Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves.

Hint #2 (Jersey Numbers): During his 15 seasons in the big leagues, this player wore the following jersey numbers: 21 and 22.  He wore 22 for the Atlanta Braves.

Hint #3 (Individual Accolades): This player was an all-star one time in 2018. He finished 6th in Rookie of the Year voting back in 2006. He has three Gold Glove Awards and one Silver Slugger Award. He also finished 18th in MVP voting in 2018. 

Hint #4 (Braves Stats): This player was with the Braves from 2015-2020. He hit .283 with 48 home runs and 388 runs batted in over his six seasons with Atlanta. 

Hint #5 (Random Fact): This player was viewed by many as ‘Mr. Consistent or Ol Reliable’ because of his longevity and consistent performance year in and year out. He was the outfielder for Baltimore that fielded Derek Jeter’s last career hit (walk-off single) and tried to throw the winning run out at the plate but could not nail him.

Answer: Nick Markakis

Nick Markakis began his MLB career in 2006 at the age of 22. He stayed very consistent throughout his time in the big leagues, hitting .288 with 189 home runs and 1,046 runs batted in. 

Markakis did not hit below .250 in any season. He also racked up three Gold Glove Awards thanks to his impressive defensive efforts. After the Covid season of 2020, Markakis decided it was time to hang up the cleats. He was the definition of “play your game and let the rest fall into place.”
