Gerald Perry was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 1978 draft out of high school. Perry played high school baseball in Hilton Head, South Carolina, part of the region that is known as "Braves country".

He spent a total of 7 seasons with the Atlanta Braves. During this stretch, Perry appeared in 643 games as a first basemen, left fielder, or pinch hitter. This was enough time for him to post a .270 batting average with 37 home runs and 246 runs batted in while adding 105 stolen bases with a Braves jersey on.
