After another rough outing from the Atlanta Braves bullpen, as they fell to the Phillies 6-4 in the second game of the series last night despite getting a solid outing from rookie Jared Shuster. The third game of this four game set will feature a pitching matchup each team will feel familiar with as Charlie Morton squares off against Zack Wheeler.

Braves vs. Phillies Pitching Matchup

There is no secrets as to what each pitcher will be trying to do agaisnt their opponent tonight. As division rivals the Braves have seen Wheeler on numerous occasions. Coming into tonight Wheeler has a 3-4 record, 4.11 ERA, and a 2.90 FIP. The numbers suggest he has been a bit unlucky as his .327 BABIP is nearly a career high. Wheelers savant profile still looks really good, so the Braves bats will have to work hard tonight. Among Braves hitters with the most success against Wheeler is Austin Riley who sports a .267 average in 30 ABs including one home run. Riley has really been hitting the ball hard recently so let’s hope that continues tonight.

Morton is coming off probably his roughest outing of the season, where he went five innings and gave up six earned runs in the loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, Charlie Morton has actually struggled a bit against the Phillies in his career. He owns a 5-6 record with 4.81 ERA in 17 appearances against Philadelphia. Morton will have to keep Alec Bohm and Bryce Harper in check, as both guys have an over .400 batting average in 20 plus plate appearances against Morton. Let’s hope Charlie has that great curveball working today and gets the Braves back in the win column.
