Former All-Star Braves pitcher Julio Teherán finds new home in AL East
Heading into year number 13 in his career, Julio Teherán will pitch for an AL East team for the first time.
Julio Teherán spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the Atlanta Braves. Now, Teherán is hoping to suit up for his fourth team in five years. The Baltimore Orioles are the American League team giving Teherán another shot in 2024, after they recently signed him to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training.
Former Braves ace lands in Baltimore
After a couple of subpar years when he left Atlanta, Teherán didn't pitch in the majors at all in 2022. Many thought his career was over, until the Brewers gave him another chance last year. Teherán made the most of his opportunity in his 11 starts with the Brew crew.
He posted a respectable 4.40 ERA, 4.67 xFIP, and 0.3 fWAR via Fangraphs in his 71.2 innings last season. That includes back to back outings against the Braves in late July. The first of which was a stellar six innings of three-hit ball. The second start took place at Truist Park, and didn't go nearly as well for Julio. In that game he pitched five innings, but surrendered nine earned runs, eleven hits, and three homers.
Those numbers are certainly fine for your organizational depth or fifth starter type pitchers. The former high-end Braves prospect will now look to work his way into the backend of the Orioles rotation in 2024.
This is definitely a needed signing for Baltimore, considering the unfortunate recent news of one of their top pitchers Kyle Bradish starting the season on the IL thanks to a sprained UCL. If Teherán is able to break camp with the big league club, he will earn a $2 million salary.
Thus far, Teherán has put together solid career numbers. He owns a 81-82 record, 3.83 ERA, 4.37 FIP, and 13.2 fWAR. He'll look to build upon those in Baltimore in 2024.
