The Braves had a busy offseason, which is great if you're like me and love to see which Braves are wearing which numbers. From the new guys, to a few players who have decided that a number like #73 didn't fit their back, we're breaking down the new number assignments for Atlanta Braves players.
These numbers assignments come from Braves.com I have been able to find updates fromMLB Jersey Numbers on Twitter, and posts on the Braves throughout Spring Training. The last player to wear a certain number comes from Baseball Reference.
Same team, new number
You know these guys, but they're starting 2024 fresh with a new number.
AJ Smith-Shawver #32 (Old Number: #62) | Last worn by Collin McHugh (2022-2023)
AJ Smith-Shawver burst onto the scene last year despite only having three years of total pitching experience. As many starters do after receiving a high number during their rookie campaign, Smith-Shawver has decided to downsize, and is wearing #32 this Spring Training.
Darius Vines #61 (Old Number: #64) | Last worn by Nick Anderson (2023)
Darius Vines has also decided to take a lower number, as many starting pitchers do after their first season in the bigs. Unlike Smith-Shawver, however, he's decided to go with #61, just three numbers down from his previous number.
Daysbel Hernandez #62 (Old Number: #75) | Last worn by AJ Smith-Shawver (2023)
Hernandez made four appearances during the regular season for the Braves last season in his debut season with the number #75. This season, he'll be trying to crack the club with AJ Smith-Shawver's old number.
You can get a glimpse of him in his new number in Reynaldo Lopez's Instagram video here.
Alan Winans #59 (Old Number: #72) | Last worn by Dereck Rodríguez (2023)
Winans joins the starting-pitchers-downsizing-their-number party, subtracting 13 from his debut number to #59.
