At the moment, there is arguably no pitcher across the entire Atlanta Braves organization, starter or reliever, that has pitched better across the last month than Allan Winans.
Yes, after a bit of a slow start to the year for the prospect, Winans has been nothing short of special during June, a month that he originally entered with an ERA sitting at 4.43 with Triple-A Gwinnett.
During June, Winans has made four different starts with the Stripers in which he owns a phenomenal 0.36 ERA and 34:4 K:BB ratio across 25 IP. Allowing only one earned run combined across those four starts, opponents are also slashing .149/.187/.161 against Winans during June, which translates to a .348 OPS.
As a result of this month, Winans' overall season numbers now sit at a 4-3 record with a 2.88 ERA and 67:22 K:BB ratio across 65.2 IP, which is also across 12 appearances (11 starts). Opponents are also batting for a combined .207 AVG against the right-hander this season.
So, with the right-hander currently in the midst of yet another strong season in Triple-A, does Winans deserve another chance in the Braves major league rotation?
Could prospect Allan Winans soon join the Atlanta Braves rotation?
A player who originally made his MLB debut in limited action with Atlanta last season, Winans, looking back, had a bit of an up-and-down first sample size in the major leagues.
After allowing only two earned runs across his first two starts, Winans struggled at times over his next four, a stretch that included two starts with over five earned runs allowed. Making only six starts, Winans posted a 5.29 ERA and 34:8 K:BB ratio across 32.1 IP, and would spend the remainder of his time last year in Triple-A.
Winans has also seen time with Atlanta so far this season as well, but struggled in his lone start by allowing six earned runs back across five innings on April 11.
So, does the right-hander now deserve another chance in the Braves rotation after this strong month of June?
The Braves No. 25 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Winans is obviously in the middle of a stellar stretch down in Triple-A, and because of this could easily get a chance with the major league roster. This could come as a starter, or even in the bullpen where he has a notable amount of experience in his professional career.
Should that not happen as well, and Winans maintains this level of play in Triple-A, is the 28-year-old right-hander a trade candidate for the Atlanta Braves at the deadline?
