Coming off a much needed (and dramatic) win in the series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, the Atlanta Braves now send Kyle Wright to the mound to make his 2023 season debut against Luis Cessa and the Reds to hopefully secure yet another series win for the Atlanta Braves professional baseball club.
Braves vs. Reds Pitching Matchup
Kyle Wright was not able to be ready for the start of the 2023 season due to getting a cortisone shot in his throwing shoulder late in the offseason and not being able to get stretched out in time. The Braves sent Wright down to Gwinnett to give him the time to get ready and while his lone start at Gwinnett last week wasn't exactly pretty, he did go six innings and strike out six batters to go along with some less than desirable other parts of the stat line. No one on the Reds have more than three at-bats against Kyle in their careers, but we at least know that the Reds have been one of the worst teams in the league offensively so far with TJ Friedl and Jonathan India having the best starts so far.
The Braves have marginally more experience against Luis Cessa, but not by much with a few guys (Orlando Arcia, Kevin Pillar, and Austin Riley) having had some measure of success against him. Cessa pitched into the six inning of his first start of the season and gave up a couple of earned runs and is coming off a season where he was decidedly meh (0.0 fWAR in 80.2 innings between the bullpen and starting). This is a guy that doesn't have eye-popping stuff and who doesn't strike out a ton of batters, so hopefully the Braves can do some damage against him after struggling offensively in recent games (at least until Sean Murphy took over last night).
