Braves trade popular promotion target, former postseason star at last minute to KC
The Braves part ways with veteran bat as they show faith in current roster for stretch run.
Despite the trade deadline passing nearly a month ago, Alex Anthopoulos has found a way to make a move in August. He did so the only way he could by trading a minor league player to the Kansas City Royals while getting back a little cash from the Royals to complete the deal.
However, the player shipped to Kansas City was a notable one in former American League batting champion and Houston Astros World Series hero Yuli Gurriel. The Braves reportedly acquired cash in the deal.
Braves trade Gurriel to Royals in exchange for cash
Gurriel orginally signed a minor league deal earlier in the season with the hopes he could make a Major League comeback at 40 years-old. Despite hitting .292 with 12 home runs in 75 games for Gwinnett, Gurriel couldn't crack the MLB roster because of his defensive limitations. He last appeared in the bigs with the Miami Marlins in 2023.
When Austin Riley went down a right hand fracture a short time ago, speculation came up that Gurriel could make the switch defensively and get the callup. The Braves indeed maneuvered Gurriel to third base, but the emergence of Gio Urshela made Gurriel's promotion chances very slim.
Gurriel's chances to make a big league comeback should improve out in Kansas City, who is fighting for the American League Central division crown. As for the Braves they'll get a little money back towards the books in exchange for a player that wasn't going to make an impact for the Major League squad.
Should the Braves sustain another infield injury they have plenty of reinforcements ready in the minor league system. However, after such an injury plagued season for Atlanta already, let's hope the injuries have come to a stop in 2024.
