The big weekend series between the top two teams in the NL East got off to a wild start last night. The Atlanta Braves reminded the Marlins why they are the ones that have won five straight NL East division titles, as they put up 14 runs in their blowout win last night.
Before the series started we got a quote from Jazz Chisholm Jr. claiming this matchup was an NLCS preview. And don’t get me wrong the Marlins are very good team, but right now the Braves have just dominanted them thus far in 2023. Atlanta has already clinched the season series and will look to continue the dominance behind veteran Charlie Morton.
Pitching Matchup for Braves vs. Marlins
One of the coolest storylines with today’s game is the difference in expirence on the mound between the two starting pitchers. On one side you have the 20 year-old Eury Perez making just his tenth big league start. On the other side you have the 39 year-old veteran Charlie Morton making his 338th big league start.
If Corbin Carroll wasn’t having such a dominant first half, you could possibly be hearing Eury Perez’s name floated around more often when talking about the rookie of the year award. So far in nine starts Perez has a 5-1 record with a 1.34 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 3.04 FIP. The highly touted prospect has more than looked the part so far in his rookie campaign.
Charlie Morton will be making his second start of the season against Miami. In his first outing he got the win, thanks to seven innings of one run ball accompanied with nine strikeouts. Hopefully Charlie can cook up more of the same today as well.
