A few years ago, a Charlie Morton vs. Max Scherzer matchup would have been appointment television, but the Atlanta Braves' matchup with the Mets this evening feels more like a case of wondering which guy can stave off Father Time just a little bit longer.
Fortunately for the Braves, not only did they comeback and take down the Mets in the first game of the series, but they also got some extra motivation courtesy of Pete Alonso who decided to do some chirping after hitting a long homer off of Bryce Elder. It is always nice to have a player on a division rival lean into being a villain even if he a bit of a goober....it makes it fun for the players and fans.
Braves vs. Mets Pitching Matchup
Charlie Morton gets the mound for the Braves and he is coming off back to back starts where he has struck out nine batters including going seven strong innings against Arizona his last time out. Charlie has certainly had his ups and downs this season and lefties, in particular, have been a bit of an issue and the Mets have some dangerous bats from the left side. Jeff McNeil has had some success against Morton including a couple of homers in his career, although Morton has largely held Francisco Lindor in check over a pretty large sample.
For the Mets, a familiar face is taking the mound as Max Scherzer and the Braves have plenty of history going back to Scherzer's days with the Nationals. Max looked very human early on in the season, but he has given up just three earned runs total his last four starts. Ronald Acuna Jr. has had some success against Max as he is hitting .281 with a couple homers in his career against him. Marcell Ozuna has also put up decent numbers against him while Ozzie Albies, well, has had some challenges against him.
