Less than a week ago, the Atlanta Braves made their initial round of roster cuts to the big league camp down in Florida. Late yesterday afternoon, the Braves announced the second round of names to be sent to minor league camp.
Among those eight players one happens to be a reliever who was on the 2023 NLDS roster and projected to make the Braves Opening Day roster by some.
Daysbel Hernández among those reassigned to minor league camp
A plethora of arms highlighted the group of eight sent to minor league camp yesterday. Perhaps most notably of those was Daysbel Hernández, who had a legit case to make the Opening Day roster. However, Hernández was always facing an uphill battle of making the team, simply because he is one of the few relievers in the Braves system with minor league options remaining. Although he won't be with the team to start the season in Philadelphia, don't be shocked if the Braves call Hernández up to Atlanta in the first couple of months.
Among the others who were grouped in this latest round of roster cuts is the 2021 World Series game three starter Ian Anderson. This was just more of a housekeeping move, as Anderson will open the year on the IL as he looks to make his way back from Tommy John surgery later this summer.
Darius Vines, Dylan Dodd, and Allan Winans started a handful of games for the Braves in 2023, but as we expected they will begin the 2024 season in Gwinnett's rotation. Pitchers Ben Bowden and Tommy Doyle, along with catcher Tyler Tolve round out the remaining guys who were in this wave of Spring Training cuts.
This brings the number of bodies left in big league camp to around 50 for Atlanta. Still a long way to go before they trim it down to that final 26-man roster number, so you can expect another wave of cuts in the coming week. Once that happens, we will have it ready for your viewership along with any other notable developments to come out of Braves Spring Training, so stay tuned.
