Braves bullpen carousel continues as one reliever is recalled and one heads to the IL
Multiple bullpen arms now reside on the injured list for the Braves after today's transaction.
The Braves made another roster move ahead of today's game with the Washington Nationals as they recalled RHP Daysbel Hernandez, and placed RHP Jimmy Herget on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation. It has been a flurry of roster moves lately for the Braves, as they look to piece together a healthy bullpen heading into the summer months.
Braves continue trend of prioritizing fresh bullpen arms
Hernandez was last in Atlanta in late May, when he served as the teams 27th man during a doubleheader against the Padres. In his 19.2 innings of work with Gwinnett this year, Hernandez has a 2.29 ERA, 27 Ks, and 11 BBs.
Herget joins left-handed pitchers A.J. Minter, and Tyler Matzek in current bullpen arms that reside on the injured list. Of course the big news to come out of Washington today is the sighting of top prospect and 2023 first round pick, Hurston Waldrep. Although an official roster move has not been announced yet, Waldrep is expected to start the series finale on Sunday according to Braves' beat writer Mark Bowman.
It's likely that Hernandez will see action today, and promptly be sent back to Gwinnett after the game to make room for Waldrep on the big league roster. Of course, there is also the possibility that Spencer Schwellenbach will be sent down in his place as well.
However, that scenario seems unlikely as the Braves are making a concerted effort to give top starters Max Fried, Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, and Charlie Morton extra days of rest. The logic makes a ton of sense when you figure in Morton's age, Lopez's past few seasons as a reliever, and Fried/Sale's injury history. Once the official announcement is made we will provide updates here on the site, so stay tuned.
