Atlanta was unable to back a good performance last night from their pitchers, as they dropped the series opener to San Diego. It was a tough showing for the Braves offense, as they struck out 18 times over the course of the night.

Some bullpen reinforcement was announced this morning, in the form of RHP Pierce Johnson returning from the injured list. They may lean on that pretty rested bullpen early, if Elder experiences any troubles with the Padres lineup.

Probable starting pitchers for Braves vs. Padres

Bryce Elder (1-1, 4.79 ERA) has had his share of ups and downs in his young career, and his 2024 season is following that script. His latest start against the Mets was a fair performance, as he pitched into the sixth inning. The best trend for Elder is that he made it through his start without allowing a walk, a key indication to how well he performs.

Yu Darvish (3-1, 2.43 ERA) has shown no signs of slowing down in his age 37 season. Darvish signed an extension in February of 2023 that takes him through the 2028 season, and the early returns for the Padres have been tremendous. He likely has the biggest kitchen sink of all starting pitchers, as he throws eight different pitches with at least 5% frequency.
