Chris Sale's third start for the Atlanta Braves had some hiccups on Saturday but overall he pitched extremely well in the team's 5-1 loss to the Marlins. He was almost out of the fifth inning with around 60 pitches thrown but Luis Arraez somehow made contact on a slider on the outside corner that he beat out for a single.
Sale then walked Josh Bell and Jake Burger to load the bases. He should have struck out Jake Burger but the umpire missed two strike calls on the corner and this fired Sale up. Unfortunately, his first pitch was laced to left field for a 3-run double. Despite this setback, Sale recovered and proceeded to retire the next 7 batters in a row to end his outing on a good note. It was an impressive seven-inning performance that should have ended with Sale only giving up two runs.
The Braves now turn their attention to a new game, hoping to end the series on a high note before heading off to Houston to face a tough Astros team. Let's check out today's starters and lineups.
Probable starting pitchers
Charlie Morton (1-0, 3.18 ERA) faces Miami on Sunday and he will hope for better results than in his last start. He walked five batters and allowed four runs through 5.2 innings against the Mets. Morton just struggled a bit with command during that start. Hopefully, he will fare much better in Miami. Atlanta's veteran starter has a career ERA of 3.92 through 140 innings with 46 walks and 134 strikeouts against the Marlins.
Jesus Luzardo (0-2, 7.20 ERA) is one of the Marlins best arms but he's struggled recently. He started out the year strong against the Pirates with an eight strikeout performance. The next two outings weren't as great with the most recent one against the Yankees going very poorly. Luzardo allowed seven runs on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts. He will need to be careful with a Braves offense that can explode at any moment.
