The Braves had an impressive return to Houston as they beat the Astros 6-1 thanks to a late-inning surge against Josh Hader. Darius Vines was very impressive in a spot start for the Braves and completed 4.1 innings allowing just one run. He settled in nicely and provided the team with exactly what they needed from him in a spot start.
Atlanta received a bit of disappointing news before the game as Ozzie Albies was placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured big toe. There is no real timetable for return yet but we will keep you updated as they are announced. The Braves recalled David Fletcher from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace Albies roster spot.
Game two in Houston looks to be another great game. Monday's game felt like a playoff atmosphere and it was a lot of fun to watch. It's like the Braves just returned right back to the magic from the 2021 World Series. They were just one run away from having the exact same final score as game six when they clinched the championship.
Let's check out today's starters and lineups.
Probable starting pitchers
Reynaldo López (1-0, 0.75 ERA) will start for the Braves on Tuesday evening. This is his third start of the season and it promises to be another good one. He has done a good job keeping hitters off balance and his fastball velocity has been very good, sitting around the 95-96 mph range. Through 12 innings he's allowed just one run on seven hits including five walks and 11 strikeouts. If there's one knock against him, it's the walk total and he will need to be careful issuing those to a very dangerous Astros team.
Hunter Brown (0-2, 16.43 ERA) takes the mound for the Astros and he's been struggling this season. He's started three games and only pitched through 7.2 innings, allowing 14 runs on 23 hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts. D.J. Short of NBC Sports/Roto World shared a post on X that shows how well teams are hitting against Brown early on in 2024 and it is alarming.
Opponents are batting .500/.566/.739 against the young right-hander. Only four Braves have faced Brown in their career and that includes Ronald Acuña Jr., Jarred Kelenic, Austin Riley, and Matt Olson. The first three batters have two hits each against him and Olson is hitless. Brown could be in for a very rough outing again tonight.
