New York Mets owner, Steve Cohen held a press conference today to address the team's struggles. The Mets opened the season as one of the Braves biggest obstacles in the way of Atlanta's sixth straight division title, but have slipped to 16 games back after a woeful 7-16 June record.

Cohen has been much more hands-on with the team than a typical owner. The Mets spend more than any team and their 2023 payroll is $65 million higher than the New York Yankees, who have the second-highest payroll.

3 things from Steve Cohen's press Conference braves fans will love

1. The Mets are behind for the future, according to Cohen

While the Braves seem to pull a random prospect from the minors every season, the Mets haven't had that luxury, especially with the team's starting pitching.

While New York is spending $86.67 million on two starters alone this year, Cohen noted that the farm system isn't where he wants it to be.

If the Mets are unable to win this year, the team will need to continue spending on high-dollar free agents, which they've made mixed results so far.

2. Steve Cohen doesn't sugar coat it

For the Braves fans who get pleasure from opposing teams' suffering, this was the press conference for you. Cohen didn't skirt around the team's struggles, and said, "It's terrible!" when discussing the team's play.

While the owner said he hopes things improved, he didn't try to make promises for a turnaround. If the Mets are in a similar position towards the end of next month, Cohen stated that the team would not be buying.

In addition to the Mets' play on the field, Cohen noted the difficulty he and the team have had with trying to fill the President of Baseball Operations, a position that has been open since Sandy Alderson stepped down last September.

The Braves' current President of Baseball Operations is Alex Anthopoulos. Braves fans should be grateful for the stability.

3. The Mets could sell

If the Mets continue their downward trajectory, the Mets could become one of the biggest sellers this July.

Max Scherzer was reported to be open to waiving his no-trade clause yesterday, and while the team would likely have to pay down the ace's salary, the righty could be one of the biggest targets for contending teams.

The team has already traded Eduardo Escobar, paying down part of the infielder's salary, and Cohen said he would be willing to add money if the team was selling.

However...

2 things Braves fans will dislike

1. He still believes in the team

While he didn't dismiss the possibility of selling, Steve Cohen did cite the fact that there has been a team every year in the past four seasons to come back from eight games back of playoff contention (where the Mets sat prior to last night's game).

He noted his patience with the team and said, "The worst thing you can do is be impulsive." Cohen believes that having a short fuse with the struggling team would compound the current issues.

While some Braves would love to see the Mets start tearing apart the team now, it looks like, at least for now, the Mets are still eyeing the playoffs.

2. Cohen is committed to Buck Showalter and Billy Eppler through the end of the season

While some Braves fans would find joy in watching a sinking ship fire off management during a poor season, Cohen stated he was committed to Buck Showalter and Billy Eppler through the end of the season.

Of course, sometimes, firing a manager does turn around a team. Just last year, the Philadelphia Phillies were sitting in a very similar situation, albeit earlier in the season, when they fired Joe Girardi. The change spurred the Phillies into a World Series run.
