The Atlanta Braves' team name has been a very hot topic in recent years. Some few the "Braves" as derogatory towards Native Americans while others, including the team, viewing the name as a tribute to them while also being a name inexorably intertwined with the team's history. When the Guardians underwent their name change, there was a lot of chatter that the Braves could be next.

However, the team has stood firm in wanting to keep their name while also working hard to try and reinforce their ties with the Native American community particularly in Georgia. Over the last several years, any momentum towards a name change has stalled with only the occasional protest against "the chop" along the way.

One local Georgia group is trying to change that as Bravest ATL is pushing for the team to change their name away from Native American imagery and towards branding that would honor local firefighters.

Local group pushing for Braves name change is likely to face an uphill battle

While there is little appetite at the moment for changing the Braves' name on a wide scale, Bravest ATL's idea isn't completely without merit. Rebrands have been a resounding success on the business side down in the minor leagues and the firefighter motif would still allow the team to use similar brand imagery, but as firefighter axes instead of tomahawks.

The group has apparently been in conversations with the team itself and is selling merch to spread the word while raising money to give firefighters and other frontline workers tickets to Braves games. The team hasn't said anything publicly about the effort, but it is definitely getting a lot more media coverage lately.

There is little chance that this effort will be successful. If the Braves were going to change their name, they would have done it when teams like the Guardians and Commanders did it. This is a story worth following, but the Braves have made their feelings clear on the matter already and it is unlikely they will find this pitch particularly convincing with how much they have invested in preserving their brand already.
