Journeyman pitchers bouncing from team to team late in the season should never surprise anyone. However, a pitcher being so bad that an Atlanta Braves team 11 games under .500 couldn't convince themselves to keep around, then ultimately landing on the team with the best record in baseball is a bit shocking.

The Milwaukee Brewers announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have signed recent Atlanta Braves castoff, Erick Fedde to a one-year deal. This move comes after the first place Brew crew had to put star closer, Trevor Megill on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor strain. Fedde has a rough 5.76 ERA and 5.19 FIP in 125 innings this season.

Erick Fedde lands in Milwaukee less than a week after his release from the Braves

Fedde was acquired by Atlanta in late July after members of the rotation began to drop like flies. He was brought in to eat innings for a Braves team that had fallen completely out of contention and early in the process, Fedde did his job. However, Fedde's serviceable work didn't last long and with the emergence of Hurston Waldrep in the rotation, he eventually became expendable.

The Brewers are getting Fedde in a rough patch during his career as his 2025 results have been quite ugly. With the Braves, Fedde pitched in just over 23 innings of work and had a 8.10 ERA and 5.48 FIP. He struggles to strikeout hitters with any regularity, and gave up 11 hits in 4.1 innings during his last outing back on August 22, against the Mets.

However, Milwaukee is basically a pitching lab for guys who are thought to be on a downward trajectory in their career. Perhaps the Brewers can find something in Fedde's repertoire and turn him back into a serviceable Major League arm. Regardless, it quickly became apparent that Fedde wasn't going to help Atlanta this year or at all in the foreseeable future. Hopefully, Fedde can bounce back with the Brewers, but if this signing ends up being about an arm getting Milwaukee through September, then eventually getting cut loose no one will really be surprised.
