To the surprise of no one at this point, the Atlanta Braves have been getting quite a bit of love in MLB power rankings. As it turns out, having the most wins in baseball along with one of the most offenses AND pitching staffs in the league tends to attract some attention, even if it probably took longer than it should have. However, ESPN's most recent power rankings contained a curious little wrinkle that has (almost) nothing to do with their actual ranking.
The Braves placed in the top spot of the power rankings, which, again, was expected. Perhaps one could make an argument for the Dodgers, but not a particularly serious or informed. However, ESPN's Brad Doolittle broke down some curious numbers that seem to show that while Truist Park was previously a pretty neutral ballpark for hitters and pitchers, that has definitely not been the case in 2026.
Somehow, Truist Park is the anti-launching pad in 2026 for the Braves and everyone else
At first glance, these numbers might actually seem like proof that the Braves' pitching staff has been particularly awesome. That is true sometimes, but that teams average 3.76 runs per game is pretty startling when you consider that only three other parks in baseball have given up less. More importantly, the numbers aren't just about the Braves' opponents' ability to score.
According to Doolittle, the Braves' hitters scored roughly 5.97 runs a game on the road this year. Given that Atlanta is 23-10 on the road this season and has looked very strong in some tough road environments, that does seem to track. However, even the Braves' vaunted offense is still being limited to just 4.41 runs per game at home. That...is pretty wild.
Now, the easy explanation here is that we are talking about a small sample of games in the spring. The ball always flies better at Truist once the weather warms up, and all it would take to skew the data a bit here is a week or two of unusually windy weather blowing into Truist. It probably doesn't make much sense to declare Truist a pitcher's paradise, but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on as we get into summer.
