The Atlanta Braves have found themselves with another intriguing scenario as the regular season draws near. A 95 mph hit Sean Murphy in a game which fractured his left rib and put him out for 4-6 weeks.
This has paved the way for Atlanta's #1 prospect Drake Baldwin to make his case for the Opening Day roster. The Braves do have a couple of veterans in Chadwick Tromp, Sandy Leon, and Curt Casali who could easily fill the role until Murphy returns.
However, Baldwin has impressed everyone in camp the last three years and 2024 was a massive breakout for him. His power was on full display and he could be a force in the MLB lineup.
Drake Baldwin impressed Braves ace Chris Sale with his skills behind the plate
Baldwin got a chance to start in Tuesday's spring game against the Twins. He received a very high compliment from the reigning NL Cy Young Chris Sale who completed four scoreless innings. It was the first time the pair had worked together and it went off without a hitch.
Sale was very complimentary of Baldwin's work ethic and told Braves insider Mark Bowman, “He’s got a great routine and he’s around all the right guys. That’s what you want from a guy who is in position to take over a very important position. He’s not afraid to ask questions and he’s doing all the right things.”

It's a fair assessment as Baldwin, who is 23 years old, didn't look phased behind the plate. The Missouri State product looks like he is more than ready for the opportunity at hand. Ultimately, the decision lies with the organization but he's making it tough for them.
Baldwin gave a lot of credit to the people around him and that they've helped him get this far. That belief in the backstop has given him the confidence to believe he can perform at the highest level, "I think I’d be comfortable learning all of the pitchers, trying to get a relationship with them if it does happen. I just have to be as ready as I can for the moment,” said Baldwin.
He isn't counting on anything but is prepared for the journey should Atlanta choose him. Regardless of what happens, a pitcher as decorated as Sale complimenting you has to feel really good.
