The Atlanta Braves did a great job with their decision to trade for Mauricio Dubon this offseason. It was easy to see his value early on, but he has far exceeded any expectations anyone had for him. He filled Ha-Seong Kim's void easily, and has done the same when Atlanta's outfield needs a boost as well. That's what the Braves hoped they were getting this offseason, and shows why they were confident in letting him play every day if needed.

Dubon has seized the opportunity, and he's played so well that the Braves would be wise to consider extending him before he reaches free agency. What would an extension look like if Atlanta decided to do so? The best way to do this is to see contracts for other utility players in Major League Baseball.

A contract extension for Mauricio Dubon may be extremely reasonable option for the Braves

A two-year deal with an option for a third year makes sense for Atlanta's utility man. A contract similar to the $12.8 million deal Willi Castro received from the Rockies makes sense for Dubon.

Cost-wise, he's played well enough that it's wise for the Braves to consider making that a 2-year, $16 million deal. He is currently on a one-year, $6.1 million contract, so this provides him with a slight raise for his impressive work this season. Add on a club option for a third season valued at $10 million, and that should be more than enough to complete an extension.

Dubon turns 32 in July. So a two-year deal gets him to age 34 with a possibility of a third if his production remains. He's valuable as a bench piece but clearly can handle playing every day. He'd be a fine stopgap option at shortstop for the Braves until a top prospect is ready to take over. Dubon has also made it known that he's open to remaining with Atlanta. That's one piece of the puzzle.

Dubon stated, “If they come and offer something, and it makes sense for me and my family, we’re open to hear it. It is what it is at some point. I feel like I’ve put myself in a good position, but whatever happens, happens. I’d love to stay here, man. But, like I say, it’s a business.”

Now, the Braves need to consider if he's the right fit beyond this season. It's hard to imagine the team won't consider extending him. He provides so much value and seems to be a great fit in the clubhouse. As of June 24, Dubon has already reached a 1.8 WAR, which was his total WAR for the entire 2025 season. Overall, he's having a really strong season with a .264/.316/.417 slash line, including 14 doubles, eight homers, 43 RBI, and a 100 wRC+.

Dubon's not the hottest hitter on the team, but he has been one of the best clutch hitters. With runners in scoring position, Dubon has a .354 average with 23 hits (one triple, three HR, six doubles) and 37 RBI over 71 plate appearances. He's also one of the best hitters in the eighth and ninth innings, with a .300 and .333 average, respectively. That will absolutely complement his Gold Glove-level defense. So far this season, Dubon has accumulated eight OAA and shown top-notch arm strength.

That's the perfect recipe for a contract extension and if anyone deserves it, it's him.
