One of the bigger questions coming into the 2026-2027 offseason for the Atlanta Braves was how they would manage the coaching staff decisions. While the majority of the fan base was satisfied with how Walt Weiss managed the club in his first year, there was certainly some dissatisfaction with some of the rest of the coaching staff, specifically with the hitting coaches. With Tim Hyers two-year contract expiring, there were questions whether the Braves would opt to go another direction.
However, on Wednesday, the Braves made their coaching decisions, with sources telling Jesús Cano of the Athletic that the entire staff was returning, including Hyers and the rest of the hitting staff.
Tim Hyers, rest of Braves' coaching staff set to return for 2027
When Hyers was brought on in 2025, the Braves hoped that he'd be able to replicate some of the magic of the 2023 offense, while improving on the club's situational hitting and plate discipline. Two seasons later, the team hasn't really seen any of those results.
In 2026, the Braves ended the season eighth in runs scored, but were 20th in wRC+ and the third-worst in walk-rate. Nevertheless, the Braves seem satisfied running it back with Hyers for a third season, even with his initial contract expiring after the 2026 season.
Of course, the greatest hitting coach can't end up taking the swings for a player, and Hyers wouldn't be the first hitting coach to struggle to get through to the Braves' core, and perhaps a third year may actually be the sweet spot for Hyers philosophy to finally land with the Braves offense.
On the other side of the ball, this announcement also means that Jeremy Hefner will return as Braves pitching coach. Atlanta stole Hefner after their NL East rival New York Mets opted not to retain him, and this steal may have been the sole reason the Braves were able to win the NL East this past season.
Bench coach Tony Mansolino, first base coach Antoan Richardson, third base coach Tommy Watkins, assistant hitting coach Darnell Coles, bullpen coach J.P. Martinez, catching coach Dustin Garneau, and major league coaches Eddie Perez and Tony Diaz are also set to return.
Perez and Hyers were the only two holdovers from the Snitker regime, aside from Weiss, who, of course, was promoted from bench coach to manager.
