Braves' pick in latest 2026 MLB mock draft would come with one big concern

There is a catch here.

The 2026 MLB Draft is a huge opportunity for the Atlanta Braves. The Braves very rarely pick in the top 10, and thanks to Drake Baldwin, Atlanta is getting what amounts to an extra first-round pick as well. For a farm system that is suddenly on the rise again, this is a unique opportunity to add multiple high-level talents to the organization. However, one of the players that has been most recently mocked to Atlanta would come with some questions.

When it comes to the MLB Draft, drafting to fill short-term organizational needs can be tricky. Unless you are the Angels, baseball prospects generally need at least a year or two in the minor leagues before they are even close to ready for the majors. Unless you have a guy sitting there that is going to completely change your short-term future at a position in desperate need of attention, the best course of action is almost always to just take the best player available on your board.

That strategy is complicated in this year's draft. The top tier of draft prospects is, at best, six to seven players deep, and the next tier might have two dozen players in it with real arguments. So far, the Braves have been connected at various points to Cade Townsend, Gio Rojas, Ryder Helfrick, Logan Reddemann, Drew Burress, and Chris Hacopian to differing degrees. However, a new wrinkle has emerged lately as Baseball America's most recent mock draft has the Braves taking Tyler Bell. While the college shortstop has a lot going for him, he also comes with a weird injury concern.

Latest Baseball America mock draft has Braves taking Tyler Bell, though his injury issues MAY be a red flag

At first glance, this looks like it could be a slam-dunk sort of pick. Bell is a switch-hitting shortstop who has performed very well in a tough college conference who can do a little bit of everything pretty well. Across 41 games at Kentucky this season, Bell has posted a 1.119 OPS with nine homers and 10 stolen bases. Perhaps one would prefer that he have a tick more speed or power, but those are minor nitpicks. The bigger issue is that Bell comes with some shoulder troubles.

Normally, a shoulder injury could be disqualifying for a first-round pick, especially with pitchers. However, Bell's case is different. You see, he tore the labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, and there are reports out there that he will require surgery on it, despite the fact that he has been putting up great numbers while playing through the injury in 2026. A hitter injuring his non-throwing shoulder isn't nearly as damning as the alternative, but it is also true that surgery would keep him out for a while.

Ultimately, this feels like a situation where the upcoming MLB Draft Combine (and the physicals that come with it) could help clear the air as to exactly what Bell's status going forward is going to be. If Bell's shoulder is in better shape than we think OR the repair needed doesn't come with serious questions about his long-term viability, Atlanta should absolutely have him in play. However, if the damage is such that it would require a very lengthy absence and/or could sap his swing of its explosiveness, they may want to tread lightly.
