Overall, Ozzie Albies is off to a pretty decent start for the Atlanta Braves to the 2025 season. While he hasn't been a world-beater by any stretch, a .244/.315/.436 line with four homers and a 110 wRC+ is firmly "good enough" especially when one considers that hitters are generally behind pitchers right now.

Despite a lack of hard contact, Albies isn't striking out very much and has even seen a bit of a bump to his walk rate this year. It would be better if he could bump his average up a bit, but you will take a pace of 20+ homers with above average offensive production at second base 100 times out of 100 and that is precisely what Albies is currently on pace to do.

However, what the Braves really need from him is to regain what was his best tool and that was his ability to destroy left-handed pitchers.

Where did Ozzie Albies' ability to destroy lefties go?

For a long time, the running joke amongst Braves fans was that when Albies was hitting right-handed against lefty pitchers, it was like adding Mike Trout to their lineup. The numbers kind of agree with that assessment as Albies has slashed .333/.359/.558 with 42 homers in 969 plate appearances against southpaws. All but one of those plate appearances came from the right side.

However, something strange has happened in 2025. While we are talking about a really small sample, Ozzie has only managed a .191/.227/.286 line in 22 plate appearances against lefties this season. That is a massive drop-off from what we are used to seeing Albies do against left-handers and pretty troubling considering his previous injury issues.

Our best guess is that this is just small sample weirdness that will sort itself out as the season goes on. Albies' track record against lefties is too long to think that he is just incapable of hitting lefties all of a sudden. He will face more lefty starters as the schedule progresses instead of just high leverage lefties out of the bullpen. One hopes that he can feast on them once that happens because otherwise, Albies could find himself without what is arguably his best carrying tool.
