The Atlanta Braves will finally get Jurickson Profar back from his PED suspension on Wednesday after sitting out 80 games. While it will be interesting to see how Braves fans, players, and media outlets handle his return, one undeniable fact is that Atlanta was going to have to make a roster move to accommodate his return. It appears as though the Braves did end up landing on the right one.
The two prime candidates to lose their roster spots where Alex Verdugo and Eli White. Neither were likely to get much playing time once Profar returned and both players have struggled after hot starts initially. Well, the Braves made their choice and it's Verdugo that has been designated for assignment.

Braves designate Alex Verdugo for assignment as Profar's return looms
While sending White packing had some merit as well, Verdugo felt like the clear cut choice. White at least has some defensive versality value and can at least pinch run in a pinch. Not only has Verdugo struggled defensively and lacks the speed to help there, but he has also been atrocious at the plate lately. Over his last 17 games, Verdugo has posted an anemic .429 OPS and given the quality of contact, it is a miracle it is that high.
For the Braves, the loss is pretty insignificant and may be addition by subtraction. While the idea behind trying Verdugo was valid, his continued presence on the roster allowed Brian Snitker to keep playing him in the name of lineup balance which almost certainly cost the Braves runs this year.
Atlanta signed Verdugo to a cheap minor league deal to start with as well which limits the financial impact this season. While it is unlikely they will be able to stash him in the minors after the DFA, White is likely enough outfield depth with Profar's return.
